North Euston Hotel                                                           The Esplanade, Fleetwood, FY7 6BN

Fleetwood might not be the obvious choice for a Twixmas bridge holiday but the North Euston Hotel has become popular with my guests. Although the total number of rooms is restricted because they are also hosting a dance holiday, we have been allocated more than half of them and there are no restrictions on the number we’re allowed for single occupancy. The dancers will be using the ballroom at the far end of the corridor past the restaurant, so will be sufficiently far away from the bridge room for their music and tapping feet not to disturb us.

Considered Fleetwood’s crown jewel by many, the hotel is a fine semi-circular building which opened in 1841, designed by the foremost architect of the day, Decimus Burton. It derives its name from the fact that it stood at the end of the railway line from London Euston. The imposing frontage dominates the Fleetwood waterfront and enjoys spectacular panoramic views over the Wyre estuary to Morecambe Bay and the Lake District. It depends where your room is in the rolling programme of refurbishment as to how modern it looks but all the bedrooms are clean and comfortable. The staff must be among the friendliest anywhere and the food , though tending towards the plain, is very good. The bridge room is light and airy and not too crowded as we are allowed the room next door for our array of prizes if space would otherwise be limited.

It’s probably best if you restrict yourself to the promenade as the main shopping street is rather disappointing. A  visit to the renowned Fleetwood market might be a diversion, but do check it’s open first. A trip on the tram which you can catch immediately outside the hotel could take you all the way to Blackpool, but we tend to prefer  to visit Cleveley. The Fleetwood museum is well worth a visit and you’ll learn all about Fisherman’s Friends as well as the fishing industry that is sadly no longer the mainstay of the town. If you like shopping, you can also pay a visit to the Affinity Outlet just on the outskirts of the town. We can recommend its cafes if nothing else!
