The Grand Heights Hotel is splendidly situated 600 feet above sea level, overlooking Robin Hood’s Bay in the North York Moors National Park and midway between Whitby and Scarborough. Part of the Cleveland Way runs through the grounds. It has its own rough and ready 9-hole golf course, tennis courts, croquet lawn and an indoor swimming pool. There is also a chapel as the hotel is a wedding venue. Sea view rooms are available for a supplement, though the view is not 100% guaranteed, On one occasion, a guest went to open the net curtains to see the view only to find there were none. It was the heavy sea mist, locally known as a roke that obscured the view until the day she left. Breakfast is buffet style but dinner is served to the table. Having stayed privately, I can confirm that our choices are standards on the main restaurant menu. Unfortunately, although I have a generous quota of sharing rooms, I am limited to 10 rooms for single guests. The hotel insists on taking the bookings for rooms directly, so in addition to telling me, you need to ring them to book your room and pay your £60 deposit. Don’t forget to quote “Helen’s Bridge Holidays” so you are offered the correct rates. If you wander further than the gardens, be prepared for undulations. Patrick accused me of trying to kill him when on our exploratory visit we walked to Robin Hoods Bay via the steps down and up to Wookey Hole where he had been many years previously on a geography field trip! |
