LISTED BUILDING, SO NO LIFT AND A FEW STAIRS. |
Ednam House is in the charming town of Kelso in the Scottish Borders. It is a quirky traditional hotel and considered to be one of the finest Georgian mansions in the Scottish Borders and, although extended and modernised over the years, still retains many of the original features. Please note: steps are inevitable even on the ground floor, almost all the bedrooms are on the first and second floors and there is no lift. Because of the layout, there can be quite a distance between some of the bedrooms and the stairs. Bridge is played in the rather grand ballroom which at one point was used as the town’s cinema. The hotel is only yards from Kelso Abbey and set in three acres of gardens on the banks of the River Tweed - the lounges, bar, restaurant, and bridge room all overlook the river. The hotel has a new manager and is being progressively renovated, while still managing to retain the charm of the house and providing the high standards expected of a fine hotel. My only complaint has been that the food is so good it’s difficult to start the bridge on time after dinner! Patrick and I have started going a day early, in common with several of our guests, so we can explore a little farther afield. The hotel charges pro rata for the extra night. Kelso is a delightful town with individual shops and plenty of cafes to suit all tastes. Its square claims to be the largest in Scotland and its bridge built by John Rennie was the model for Waterloo Bridge in London. There are pleasant walks by the river and along the old railway line. Herons are seen frequently and you can even catch a glimpse of a kingfisher if you’re lucky. Within easy reach is Floors Castle, Scotland's largest inhabited house, which stands in parkland overlooking the Tweed. It holds outstanding collections of paintings, furniture, porcelain and tapestry. |
£50 deposit must be paid directly to the hotel to confirm your booking. |
