North Euston Hotel                                                           The Esplanade, Fleetwood, FY7 6BN

The North Euston in Fleetwood came highly recommended, so with some trepidation, Patrick and I went from one run down former fishing port and ferry terminal (Hull) to another to see if it would be a suitable venue for bridge. Considered Fleetwood’s crown jewel by many, the hotel is a fine semi-circular building which opened in 1841, designed by the foremost architect of the day, Decimus Burton. It derives its name from the fact that it stood at the end of the railway line from London Euston. The imposing frontage dominates the Fleetwood waterfront and enjoys spectacular panoramic views over the Wyre estuary to Morecambe Bay and the Lake District. We arrived early at the hotel so went for a walk along the promenade, had a chat with some interesting and informative locals and then had lunch at an excellent café just opposite the hotel. We spent the afternoon browsing along the town’s main shopping street and paid a visit to the renowned Fleetwood market. There were stalls selling everything imaginable, though it was such a warren that I don’t think we explored it all. Our bedroom was a little dated but clean and comfortable. The staff must have been among the friendliest anywhere and the food was very good. The bridge room was light and airy. We viewed it both in the day and in the evening. The following day we bought a £4 return ticket for the tram immediately outside the hotel which would have taken us all the way to Blackpool, but we had decided to visit Cleveley. After a browse along the main shopping street we went to the seafront café for lunch and a stroll along the delightful promenade before returning by tram to Fleetwood for a visit to the museum. We were eventually thrown out! We had been so interested in the exhibits and the tales of the curators that we hadn’t realised the passage of time, so we’ll have to wait for our next trip to Fleetwood and allow a bit more time for our visit. We didn’t even have time to visit the Affinity Outlet just on the outskirts of the town, If you decide to join us for a bridge holiday, I hope you’ll be able to fit the bridge in!
