The Red Lion, a Grade II listed building, is situated by the River Wharfe in the village of Burnsall in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. To make the most of its location, this is a Holiday with Bridge venue. Recently taken over by Thwaites, so a decent pint is assured, the Red Lion is undergoing refurbishment, though certain things such as the original uneven stone stairs in the main building cannot be altered because of the listing. The food is highly rated by the locals. It has been dispensing hospitality for centuries. The cellars (reportedly inhabited by a mischievous ghost) date from the 12th century and the original “one up, one down” structure which is now the bar from the 16th century. Bedrooms are in the slightly later parts of the main pub building, the manor house and cottages, so only suitable for those fit enough to cope with flights of stairs and moving between buildings. Daytimes will be free for discovering what the local area has to offer. Burnsall is the perfect base to explore the breath-taking Yorkshire Dales on foot. With plenty of routes available from the Red Lion front door, whether you prefer the views from a fell hike, a gentle meander along a river, or a tour of the local villages. Patrick and I walked along the river to Grassington on our exploratory weekend and saw a kingfisher. If exploring by car is more your style, there is plenty to see in the area, but be prepared for single track roads. This includes Bolton Abbey, Harewood House, Harlow Carr Gardens, Stump Cross Caverns, Linton Falls, Parceval Hall Gardens, the Embsay Steam Railway and Ilkley Toy Museum to mention but a few.

I have chosen a 5 night holiday so there will still be the opportunity for plenty of bridge. Our playing room is in the function suite which has its own bar and private dining area.

Main Pub Rooms

All rooms in the main pub are accessed via an original 18th century stone staircase leading to 6 rooms on the first floor & a further 4 rooms

on the second floor.

 

Annex Rooms

There are 4 rooms in the annex which is located a short walk away & is attached to the left hand side of the main pub.  2 rooms are on

the ground floor & 2 rooms on the first floor accessed via an internal staircase.

 

Cottages

There are 5 cottages located between the main pub & the River Wharfe.  These all have ground floor entry direct through a front

door. They comprise of 2 bedrooms & a bathroom on the ground floor with lounge & kitchen upstairs.

 

Manor House (newly refurbished)

There are 8 rooms in the manor house which is located a short walk away from the pub across the car park & up a stepped

pathway.  Alternative level access is available via the main road footpath through the village.  Of the 8 rooms, 2 are on the ground floor,

3 on the first floor & 3 on the second floor.
